Language. Image. Story.
About Me
I'm Jamie Dow, a Glasgow-based Deaf creative professional, translator, writer and photographer with a passion for language, visual storytelling and the arts.
My work sits at the intersection of language, culture and creativity. With over a decade of experience in Deaf education, British Sign Language (BSL) and bilingual communication, I've developed a deep appreciation for the ways we express ideas, share experiences and tell stories across different languages and cultures.
My professional background includes English–BSL translation for organisations and projects including the Commonwealth Games, the Scottish Qualifications Authority and the University of Edinburgh, alongside literary translation, curriculum development and consultancy. I've also worked extensively to promote linguistic accessibility, Deaf representation and meaningful inclusion.
Beyond language, storytelling has always been central to my creative practice. I've written for short film, worked in script supervision and developed a photographic portfolio shaped by my travels, observations and fascination with everyday human experiences. My photography draws inspiration from cinema, capturing fleeting moments, atmosphere and the often-overlooked beauty of ordinary life.
I'm also Chair of Solar Bear, a Scottish theatre company championing Deaf-led creativity and accessible performance. This work reflects my commitment to supporting Deaf artists, developing authentic representation and creating opportunities for stories that deserve to be told.
Today, I bring these experiences together through freelance translation, film and creative consultancy, writing and photography. Whether I'm translating meaning between languages, contributing to a film production or capturing a moment through the lens, my approach remains the same: thoughtful, collaborative and grounded in the belief that good storytelling connects people.
